Industries and Clients
With specialized expertise in the energy sector, I have also supported clients in sectors spanning not-for-profit, public sector, real estate, financial services, retail, education, tourism, sport and recreation, forestry and cement.
energy and environment
My interest in energy and environment issues dates back to 1990, when I worked as a Parliamentary Intern for Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, who was then the opposition environment critic. Climate change was emerging as a serious problem. When I moved to Calgary a few years later, I knew I wanted to stay working in the field of energy and environment, so I joined an oil company, where the challenge of keeping the world moving while ensuring a sustainable future is at its most acute.
As well as nine years in-house with Petro-Canada and three years with Provident Energy Trust, I have supported a wide range of clients spanning hydrogen, oil sands, LNG, downstream, pipelines, oilfield services and electricity (including renewable generation projects).
I have led major campaigns and public relations initiatives on various energy projects and issues. Clients that I have supported on energy issues include industry associations, government bodies (all three levels of government), oil and gas companies, renewable energy companies, and pipeline companies.
city and urban issues
In both Calgary and Edmonton, I have supported a range of urban-focused companies and organizations.
I provide ongoing counsel to a leading Calgary non-profit sport and recreation organization. I assisted a City of Calgary department to map its stakeholders and develop a plan to overcome NIMBY opposition to critical infrastructure. I assisted one of Calgary's leading social services organizations in a successful effort to build public and municipal support for a transitional housing facility.
I have also worked for Edmonton clients, including a major sports organization, a not-for-profit housing foundation, and an Edmonton inner city institution working on a community revitalization.
In a volunteer capacity, I serve on the Board of Tourism Calgary and I was a member of the Calgary Bid Exploration Committee. Years ago, I led a successful community effort to save St. Angela School, a dynamic inner-city school in Bridgeland, Calgary.
start-ups
Many of my favourite clients have been start-up, young or small companies.
For several years, I have supported a Calgary-based oil company that operates in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. I have provided strategic counsel, investor relations support, design oversight, financial writing and storytelling to the company through a long and turbulent period in its history.
I have assisted two oil sands environmental technology companies to craft their core stories and elevator pitches, and to gain media attention for their work.
I have often served as an outsourced external relations leader for small companies, particularly through announcements or material events.
